Dinner at Katz's Deli

Blue Bus Discussion about NYC Graffiti

A quick note

Today we had the 6 hour drive to New York. It was agonizing to still for a long period of time on a cramped bus, but it was all worth it when we got to New York City. We took a tour of Central State Park and it was so big and beautiful. It took my breath away. Then we just rode around New York City taking pictures and making memories. For dinner we ate at Katz’s Deli. The sandwiches were HUGE and so good. But what really amazed me was New York City at night. You couldn’t see the stars the lights were so bright. I have never seen anything to amazing. I’m so happy I took this opportunity.

More Day One

Our first stop was at the Apollo Theater – the beginning of many people’s journey to fame.  The amazing guy who gave us the tour, Billy Mitchell, sister just died.  Many co-workers tried convincing him to cancel the tour, but he graced us with the glory of the Apollo Theater to get his mind off his newly lost sister.  To help him get through this tragic event we gave him fresh lobster from Maine.  There were many glorious acts in our very own “Amateur Night” and everyone was  a winner.  We saw the Wall of Signatures which was where all the performers from the past 50 years signed their names.   The signatures ranged from Taylor Swift to Pee Wee Herman.  The dressing rooms off the stage were just like the ones in the movies minus the personal things for their character.

On the way to Central Park, the time on the bus was spent singing and dancing in the seats.  Central Park had many different kinds of people:  a man playing a guitar, a woman with a cat selling bracelets, someone doing henna tattoos, and the self-proclaimed Mayor of Strawberry Fields who knew many facts about John Lennon.

On the way to Katz’s Deli we came across many different places.  There was a M&M’s shop entirely dedicated to all products of M&M’s.  There are many different advertisements for Spiderman, but outside the M&M’s shop there was a Spiderman wearing a fanny pack!  Later on we saw many cartoon mascots including Elmo from Sesame Street and Woody from Toy Story.  After a long time we finally found Katz’s Deli.  The way you order the food was very confusing, but you finally understood what to do it became a lot easier.

The hotel looked very nice but some of us didn’t really have the chance to experience it because they were so tired!

Tuesday: Day 1 – The Big Apple

I took an early start to the long day, 5 is when I woke up but not once did I feel fatigued until my head hit my pillow at 11:30 at night. If every day was eventful, educational, and fun as the day I’m in for a life changing week! We start off with a five hour drive but it only seemed like two. Laughs were swapped and excitement stirred. The trip was luxurious, so to say. Our next stop was Apollo Theater, an incredible place! My peers got to stand on center stage where legends have stood many years before. The wall with all the signatures was amazing! My friend and I took a picture with the replica of the tree of hope, which is really just a stump. Performers rub this stump for good luck. Our speaker Billy Mitchell was an inspirational person. He told us all about the people he had met during his many years at Apollo Theater, which he had started working at when he was very young. It was lucky for us that he was there at all, considering he had just suffered the loss of his sister. But, having a strong devotion to the arts Billy pulled through and was there at our presentation. For me, the most amazing part of the day was on the bus on our way back from Katz’s Deli. I looked up from my book, and found I couldn’t look back down. Times Square, dazzling, mesmerizing, and breath taking. The lights against the dark sky were illuminating. Bill boards and posters filled the streets with advertisements. It looked just like it does in movies and pictures. Truly magical! A city that never sleeps; the lights shine to bright!
